As part of the Sutherland Road improvements, LB Waltham Forest commissioned an art initiative to design a new visual identity for the entrance shutters of the industrial units along Sutherland Road. Flowers of Sutherland Road is the result of a collaboration with graphic designers EUROPA.
The vibrant flower graphics, applied to sixteen shutters by signwriters Many Hands, were developed with young people participating in the Make Stuff Club at Blackhorse Road Workshop. Each flower is composed of parts of the species being planted on Sutherland Road as part of a new 500m-long sustainable urban drainage system, which also incorporates 68 trees. By reimagining and combining petals, pistils, sepals, stamens, and stems, the young people created playful and otherworldly compositions that reframe the street and draw attention to the biodiversity focused planting.
